Chanting Bards International Poetry Anthology for Children

Image
I am very pleased to have my poem titled "Shapes are Fun" published in this amazing anthology of poems for children to encourage them to recite and develop in them an appreciation of poetry.  I believe poetry and more importantly, recitation of poetry plays a vital role in the various aspects of a child's literacy development. Children learn new words, gain confidence when they practice recitation in front of an audience thus helping shy children do away with their reservations. It also helps children with memorisation and aids in a child's self expression. It also aids in the emotional and physical development of children.  This book has beautiful poems with thought provoking illustrations.  The brains behind this,  Mr. Gopakumar Radhakrishnan encourages you to submit the video recording of your child's recitation to them (details in the book) and they will work at  promoting those videos on their social media pages to encourage the love for poet...

Eulogy for my Grandmother (Nani)

Image
One of the hardest things a person has to do in life is write and give an eulogy on the passing away of a loved one. Last week, my Nani left for her heavenly abode and today was the prayer meeting on the Chautha (4th Day).  I'm sharing with all of you the eulogy in the form of a poem I wrote last night for her on behalf of all her grandchildren.  I share this here because paying tribute to a dear one and speaking to a packed room full of people, while keeping your emotions in check is not easy, however is inevitable. Thank you so much for joining us in prayer this afternoon to pay homage to our beloved Nirmal Khanna. A mother is more precious than any other person. A grandmother, being a mother twice over, is closest to her grandchildren. On behalf of her grandchildren  whom she adored : Ujjwal, Kamakshi, Dhruv, Akshiena and Vyomi, this poem is dedicated to our iron lady with a will of steel. (My Nani- Nirmal Khanna) Your loving arms ...

Haiku- What Poetry means to me

Image
When you start out as a poet, I believe there is a defining force within you that forms a majority of the underlying themes in the poems you tend to write. On your journey as a poet, as your poetry matures, so does this underlying theme to reflect how far you have come. For me a poem has always been a source of inspiration. A sparkling jewel shimmering with the underlying thought. So much more precious than a real gem, for poetry in my mind is magical words, strung together in a beautiful song that touches hearts and minds alike. Hope my Haiku on what poetry means to me resonates with you. (Image Credit: flickr Felix E. Life through a lens

Image
Looks subconsciously determine how a person is perceived. This is more so in the case of women, who are judged by their appearances.  Be it their choice of clothes or length of hair. Everything becomes a topic of intense scrutiny by peers, friends colleagues and most surprisingly family.  Believe it or not, a survey conducted by Nihar Naturals #IAmCapable reveals that: a. 69% of men agree that their judgment of women is based on their looks. b. 64% of women agree that the judgments passed on them have affected their ability to reach their true potential. c. 70%of women agree that majority of judgments on women are from family members or friends rather than strangers. d. 72% of women agree that working women face more judgments on their looks or their clothes than housewives. Now what happens when a girl or a woman wears glasses because she actually needs them and doesn’t want to subject her eyes to the torture of lenses or laser treatment? Well ...

9 ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day with your little angels and teach them the essence of true love

Image
Image credit Flipping through the articles the newspaper carried this morning on Valentine’s Day left me disheartened. Accounts of singles hooking up on dating apps, just so they wouldn’t be the only ones among their friends who were dateless and sans gifts on V-day reflects the shallow consumerism, this day of pure love has become associated with. If you are a parent of a little one who is intrigued by all the hearts and mush surrounding this day, it’s really not the right message to give by being disdainful and brushing this day aside altogether. Instead use this day, as a foundation to teach your children what lasting relationships and true love is all about. Here are 9 ways you can celebrate Valentine’s Day with your little angels and teach them the essence of true love. 1.       Learning by example: In this era of short lived relationships, if in your childhood, you have been witness to a meaningful relationship between your parents, as...

Book Review- Stolen hope – Part 3 of series ‘Ramayana- The game of life’

Image
Book: Stolen hope – Part 3 of series ‘Ramayana- The game of life’ Author:  Shubha Vilas Genre: Mythology, Spirituality, Leadership I couldn’t contain my excitement when I saw BlogAdda was giving bloggers a chance to review Shubha Vilas’s latest book- Stolen Hope. The third part in his series on the great epic Ramayana called the game of life. The book arrived last week and when I opened the packaging, I was in for a real treat- an author signed copy with a small note wishing the reader an enlightened new year. I couldn’t have asked for a greater book to start my reading in the New Year, nor a more heart touching message! It felt, as if in that instant, I was being showered with blessings from the author himself- a great motivational speaker and spiritual seeker. (Personal note from the author) A little bit of a background for those who’ve not had the opportunity to read the first two parts- the first (Rise of the Sun Prince) part tells the tal...

DIY Handmade cards for any occasion: Creative Quilling

Image
Creative Quilling DIY Handmade cards for any occasion This holiday season I've taken up a new hobby, something I'd always wanted to try and wondered if I'd be successful at. I'm a fan of designing unique things to add on to gifts to give that special personal touch to whatever you choose to gift any time of the season.  A personal handmade item goes a long way considering the time, creativity and effort it takes to make one of these speaks for itself about your feelings towards the recipient of this gift. How to go about this? Well it's fairly simple! All you need is a DIY quilling kit available readily at any stationary or toy store.  My dear brother played Santa and on Christmas day and bought me a basic creative quilling kit for Christmas which I had a blast with. All you need to do is just twirl colorful paper strips into whatever shapes your heart desires and voila you have a unique way to give...
